This itinerary includes two particularly interesting archaeological sites, which participants must, however, reach using their own means of transport.
The port of Claudius and Trajan was built in the 1st century A.D. to accommodate the merchant traffic of the large ships that brought goods to Rome from all over the Mediterranean. During the tour, we shall delve into aspects of what was a huge engineering project for the time; and we shall discover how the great architect Apollodorus solved the difficulties with an innovative solution: a hexagonal basin around which extended warehouses, arsenals, the dockyard, a palace for the prefect of the Annona, a bridge and a navigable canal, which still serves its function today. Although the dock itself is in a private area, we can still admire impressive remains of the mighty complex. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, the growing importance of the port led to the establishment of a permanent settlement, called Portus Romae. Related to this settlement was the Necropolis of Porto, which we will visit in the second part of the itinerary. It consists of around two hundred burial buildings, both inhumation and incineration, of different types, all in an excellent state of preservation. We will let the protagonists of this era themselves tell us their stories through the tombs, with the inscriptions and decorations showing details of daily life in Portus.
The visit is organised by AGTAR-Associazione Guide Turistiche Abilitate Roma (Association of Qualified Tourist Guides Rome), the largest association of guides in Lazio, which proposes a number of specific itineraries for those who want to admire Rome and its surroundings while walking in the open air and at the same time increase their knowledge of the river.
The visits respect the philosophy of the Tiberland DMO: to make known sites of exceptional interest but different from those crowded by mass tourism; to promote open-air itineraries and interaction with the city and the population; to promote responsible and quality tourism, respecting the land and the local economy.
All of this is carried out to the highest quality standards: visits are conducted only by licensed tourist guides, professionals certified by the professional association AGTAR.
The guide adapts explanations and timing to the visitors, to offer an optimal experience, which varies according to age and needs.
