Under the hill called ‘Il Casale’ is a cave dug out of the tuff in Etruscan times.
An evocative walk through the woodland leads to this place of unchanged charm and long history. The cave was in fact adapted as a place of Christian worship between the 6th and 7th centuries A.D. by the Hermit Monks who remained here for a long time. The colourful frescoes that decorated the interior walls, created around 1100, were detached for conservation reasons about a century ago. Today they are on display in the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Magliano Romano.
