The origins of the festival date back to the early-1500s, when some fishermen found a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in the waters of the Tiber and brought it to a church in Trastevere.
The statue of the Madonna del Carmine, known as the Madonna Fiumarola, was then moved several times but has always remained to protect the quarter and symbolise its strong link with the river. The religious festivity merges with the popular festival and involves many areas of Trastevere starting from the banks of the Tiber: every year it is enhanced by cultural events scattered along the route which go to join the classic food and wine stands, as well as guided tours to discover the neighbourhood and smaller shows.
