A treasure trove of biodiversity 40 kilometers from Rome.
Walks, boat trips and museum visits for an immersion in the ecosystem of the Tiber and Farfa rivers.
The Nazzano Tevere - Farfa Regional Nature Reserve extends upstream of the Enel hydroelectric plant in Nazzano, and includes the stretch of the Tiber river that goes from the plant itself up to the Poggio Mirteto mountain and along the course of the Farfa river up to the Granica bridge . From the construction of a dam on the river in the fifties, for the production of electricity, a lake was formed which, thanks to the establishment of an 'Oasis for the protection of fauna', has favored the presence of numerous species of birds, some risk of extinction. Subsequently, protection was extended to some neighboring areas around 'Lake Nazzano' and the 'Riserva Naturale Tevere-Farfa' was established, the first regional nature reserve in Italy. Today the Reserve is an important 'area of regional interest' which also includes the final stretch of the Farfa river, up to its mouth, and the Monte Soratte Reserve and includes the municipalities of Fara in Sabina, Castelnuovo di Farfa, Nazzano, Torrita Tiberina and Montopoli di Sabina. The Reserve offers many opportunities to experience nature in contact with the river, choosing from various experiences suitable for adults and children. A walk along the nature trails, equipped with observation huts, allows you to immerse yourself in a fascinating habitat and discover the different plant and animal species present. The excursion on the river, with the 'Airone' and 'Martin Pescatore' boats, is an engaging way to admire the landscape and get to know the most beautiful corners of the park. A visit to the River Museum, in the historic center of Nazzano, is a useful insight into all aspects of the river ecosystem thanks to a multimedia and immersive exhibition itinerary, as well as meetings, workshops and initiatives scheduled throughout the year
