An extraordinary collection of ancient Roman ships in an exhibition space 'in progress' where history, technology and restoration come together to provide a truly unique experience.
During work on the construction of the 'Leonardo da Vinci' airport, now the capital's international hub, in the mid-1950s, a number of Roman shipwrecks were brought to light, considered to be among the most exceptional finds in the Mediterranean Sea. Exhibited in a spectacular location, in the ancient port of Claudius and Trajan, five different types of ships can be admired, the restoration of which took place on site, in front of the visitors' eyes. Three are river boats, used for transporting goods along the course of the Tiber, one is a seagoing vessel and finally, the smallest one is a rare example of a fishing boat, with a small tank in the middle to keep the catch alive. The museum itinerary is enhanced by artefacts found in the area and a multimedia room with audio-visual aids.
